I have a teaching degree from a well respected university in Ontario, Canada and I have been a teacher my whole working life. Although most of my teaching was in Health and Physical Education, the teaching was largely done in international schools in China and Hong Kong, so I have vast experience with second language learners. On top of that my wife and I moved our family with 3 small kids to Huaibei in Anhui province to be English Teachers in the teachers college for 2 years in 1996. We stayed in China for a total of 14 years and then moved to Hong Kong in 2010. Initially, an Arts and Humanities major, I soon focused on several classes related to human growth and development and teaching as a profession. I was a non-traditional student at the time and previously spent over fifteen years travelling throughout the United States and working in several different fields. Consequently, when I did return to school, I was looking for a more structured education where I could combine my life experiences - up to that point - with an English degree and teach. There was so much to the English language I wanted to know; my studies also included courses in Literary Analysis, American and British Literature, American Poetry and Anthropology. As technology was starting to play a role in every aspect of our daily lives, I would end my undergraduate English degree with a concentration in Technical Writing. Soon after receiving my undergraduate degree, I enrolled in a master's program in Information Technology Management. I wanted to take the foundational aspects of English I had learned over the past five years and see how it applied - or didn’t apply - to the IT Age. My coursework began with database management - an area I had no previous knowledge of - and found the entire program to be one of the most challenging and interesting learning experiences I have ever had. Unfortunately, I received my MS degree in March of 2008 during the global financial crisis and have never since been able to apply what I had learned. In 2010 I left the US for China where I remained for five-years teaching English in various concentrations. I taught, for example, classes in International Tourism, Hotel Management, History and Geography, Business English and IELTS. These courses were focused primarily on first and second year university students, but I have also taught Listening and Speaking classes to young learners at the kindergarten level. Both degrees gave me a greater appreciation for how English was used in the past and how it has evolved into the present in both positive and negative ways. In closing, I hold a TESOL Certification from Arizona State University. My style and approach in teaching is dependent upon the purpose and goal of the individual student or students. There are endless possibilities and subject matter that a student can pursue; learning - and teaching - is not a one-size-fits-all pursuit. Never stop learning.|
